The day before
Records are filed and accessible
Operations manual is up to date
SOPs are in place
Emergency response cards are laminated and posted
Fire evacuation plan is posted
Emergency contact list is posted
Insurance certificates are current and displayed
Licence document is displayed
Cleaning schedule is posted
Isolation facility is clean and ready
Staff are briefed on the inspection
Tea and water are available for the inspector
The morning of
Premises are clean and tidy
The first dog is in a good state (representative of care)
The records system is testable (5-minute test)
The operations manual is on the desk
The vet's contact is on the fridge
The PHP is on the wall
At the door
Greet the inspector warmly
Confirm identity (ask for council ID)
Ask for the purpose of the visit
Offer a seat and a drink
During the inspection
Be calm, polite, professional
Answer questions directly and concisely
Pull records within 60 seconds
Show the inspector the premises
Let the inspector ask the staff questions
Take notes on what the inspector says
Thank the inspector at the end
After the inspection
Complete your own notes on the inspection
Identify any actions needed (e.g. add a record)
File the inspector's business card
Wait for the report (typically 2 weeks)
